The New York Post reports a spike in utility bills due to “power-hungry data centers” straining the electrical grid–according to a study led by Bank of America economist, David Tinsley. Artificial intelligence is transforming the U.S. power system in two major ways: by optimizing grid efficiency and by driving a surge in electricity demand. The result is a mixed impact on household utility bills — short-term increases but potential long-term savings.

AI as a grid optimizer

Utilities across the country are using AI to improve reliability, reduce costs, and integrate renewable energy. A 2025 survey found that 62 % of utilities use AI for grid reliability and 45 % for demand forecasting. These systems analyze sensor and weather data to predict demand spikes, detect faults, and schedule maintenance before failures occur.

AI also helps balance renewable power. Because wind and solar output vary by the minute, AI forecasting tools have improved accuracy by up to 33 %, allowing utilities to stabilize voltage and frequency without expensive backup power. The Department of Energy reports AI systems are also being deployed to identify wildfire risks and automatically shut down lines before sparks ignite.

These innovations lower maintenance and generation costs, reduce outages, and improve energy efficiency — savings that could eventually flow to consumers through slower rate hikes.

The demand dilemma

Yet AI itself is a massive electricity consumer. Data centers powering large language models and other AI workloads are straining regional grids. Analysts estimate U.S. data centers could consume more than 10 % of national electricity by 2030, up from 4 % today.

This rising demand is pushing utilities to build new generation and transmission lines — costs that are passed to ratepayers. In the PJM Interconnection, covering 13 states and D.C., capacity auction costs rose 22 % year-on-year, contributing to 1–5 % bill increases. A Bank of America report linked rising 2025 electricity prices partly to the AI data-center boom.

Mixed impact on your bill

AI can cut costs by helping utilities operate more efficiently and shift loads away from peak hours. Dynamic pricing and smart-meter programs—powered by AI—allow households to lower bills by using electricity when it’s cheaper. But in regions hosting new data centers or where infrastructure upgrades are needed, rates are climbing to pay for higher capacity and reliability investments.

So, while AI helps utilities run smarter, its energy appetite may offset those gains in the near term.

Security and governance concerns

AI’s integration into the grid introduces new cybersecurity and reliability risks. A single algorithmic failure or cyberattack could disrupt energy management systems. Regulators are now developing safeguards to ensure transparency and human oversight in AI-driven operations.

The bottom line

AI is making the electrical grid more intelligent, resilient, and efficient — promising long-term savings and cleaner energy integration. However, the explosion of AI computing power is driving up electricity demand, forcing costly infrastructure investments that are already showing up in utility bills.

For now, Americans can expect higher rates in high-growth data-center regions, but smarter, more stable grids elsewhere. The long-term outcome depends on how well utilities balance AI’s benefits with its energy burden.
